August 5, 1971: "There is a shortage of housing at 7 Point Lookout these days. The roof has fallen in on the cabin there.
When it came time to open the lookout on the peak this spring, workers from the Trout Creek Ranger District walked up to a lookout that barely resembled the one closed out at the end of last fire season.
During the winter--about March, according to George Ogden, fire control officer at Trout Creek--the load of snow plus a heavy rain which poured unseasonably over the mountains forced one wall to break away from the rest of the building and left an unsupported roof which just fell in.
A government chartered helicopter, standing by in case of fires and used for general jobs, has been put into service ferrying the men and tools to and from the job daily. Otherwise, there would be over an hour's truck ride to the end of the road near the site each day." (Sanders County Ledger)
1973: The last season the tower was staffed and then abandoned.
1996: A Passport in Time project refurbished the lookout.
2006: The tower burned.
