June 4, 1952: "Vandals broke into the Whitefish Lookout and removed the batteries from the telephone, according to Ed Schenck who made the discovery.
Schenck said he found the Big Mountain telephones to be out of order and went to to the Lookout to investigate. At the lookout he found that the lookout had been broken into and the food box opened and the contents scattered about.
The batteries had been removed from the telephone and the switches pulled. The incident has been reported to the Forest Service officials." (The Daily Inter Lake)
July 8, 1954: "Flathead National Forest's first lightning fire was discovered yesterday near Mud Lake in Big Prairie District.
The fire, which burned about 1,200 square feet, resulted from Tuesday's lightning storm, forest officials said. It was the first fire in the Flathead Forest Continental Unit this year and the Flathead's fifth reported fire.
Two smokejumpers from Big Prairie hiked eight miles to the fire after being flown to the nearest landing field.
The fourth fire occurred Monday on the road between Whitefish and Whitefish Lookout. Forest Dispatcher Carter Helseth reported that it was caused by campers who left an intended campfire.
It was discovered by Whitefish Lookout Walter Stickney, while Stickney was going for water. He put it out." (The Daily Inter Lake)
