June 26, 1935: “Mount Headley is among some of the peaks discontinued as lookout stations in the Cabinet due to the visual observation mapping on the forest. Cube Iron Peak takes the place of Headley.” (The Sanders County Independent-Ledger)
August 26, 1936: “Halvor Ekern, lookout on Cube Iron, the other side of Silcox, reported that the other morning as he went out of his cabin he saw a little brown bear rooting around. He watched it for awhile and started down to the spring to get water. On the way he saw a fairly large black bear. When he reached the spring, as he stooped to get water, he looked up and saw a grizzly as large as a bull looking down at him. The grizzly, however, turned and ambled away leisurely after watching him. His dog froze in his tracks and was too scared to even bark.
Mrs. Ekern, Carol and Delores Helman hiked up to Cube Iron to visit with Halvor Monday, and returned Tuesday evening. Did they see a bear, and if they did would the bear or the women be the most frightened? Answer ? Another bear story next week. This is the third installment of a series.” (The Sanders County Independent-Ledger)
