July 5, 1928: "First of the new model lookouts to be used in the forest service, and of which 100 are to be built during the next five years, has been constructed by C.P. Fickes and J.B. Halm on Sheep mountain, 15 miles southwest of Superior. This structure is of ready cut material with tarpaper and shingles, but logs will be used for the lower story whenever handy. A cupola on top is of special effectiveness for the lookout's work of spotting fires in forests." (The Choteau Acantha)
February 15, 1929: "With the cutting and packing of 'Ready-cut' lookout houses at Spokane, costs for construction of such guard shelters will be decreased materially, officials of the forest service believe. C.P. Fickes of the operations department and Joe Hahn of the department of engineering designed the lookout, and erected the first of its kind on the top of Sheep mountain, near Superior, last summer.
'The lookout houses are cut to a regular pattern, and may be assembled easily,' Mr. Fickes said yesterday. 'The 15 houses ordered recently in Spokane will be ready for packing, knocked down on the mules in a few days. The lumber and glass, shingles, roofing, tarpaper has to is put the load on his mules and start for the lookout point.'
Formerly the lookouts were made of logs, and they were quite expensive to construct, involving, as such work did, the employment of an expert log builder. The new lookout, which is now the standard for District No. 1 of the forest service, can be erected by anyone." (The Helena Independent)
