August 6, 1936: "The Magpie telephone line is now within striking distance of the Hogback lookout. This protection station will be tird in with telephonic communication within the coming fortnight. All of the above has been done with CCC labor." (Northern Region News)
July 31, 1945: "The smoke was discovered late yesterday afternoon from Hogback lookout. High winds carried the flames rapidly up the gulch to the top of the ridge, spreading it from about five acres to 25 acres in less than two hours. The country is heavily timbered part of the Canyon Ferry district.
The fire was probably started by lightning storm Sunday evening." (Independent Record)
July 25, 1947: "Residents of the Craig area were combating a grass fire today on the Sterling ranch west of Holter lake, C.W. Vaughn, county agent, said today.
The fire was reported by the Hogback forest service lookout. As the fire was a long distance from the forest, the rural fire fighting organization of the community was notified.
The blaze was believed to have been caused by lightning, Vaughn said." (Independent Record)
April 12, 1949: "Plans are now being made to install a radio in Hogback lookout on the Canyon Ferry district this summer and another station at the headquarters in Helena. John Collins, high school radio instructor, will assist with installation." (The Independent Record)
October 15, 1958: "Police received a report from the forest service that a walkie-talkie radio and a pair of 7 x 50 binoculars had been taken in a break-in at the Hog Back fire lookout." (Independent Record)
