July 16, 1924: "The Haugan fire lookout station, located between Big Creek and the St. Regis was destroyed by the spreading fire Monday, the men being forced to leave without saving any of their equipment. Two packers and 10 horses were dispatched to Haugan to bring up needed supplies to the fighters, following this loss.
The fire, which was caused, in the opinion of forest officials, by a careless smoker on the middle fork of Big Creek, is now spreading toward the east fork of the creek. With the arrival of 67 men sent from Missoula, however, officials believe that the fire will be checked before it reaches the most valuable stand of white pine timber in the district. Most of the area burned was covered with young trees, grass and brush, it having been cut over about 15 years ago by the Mann Lumber company." (The Billings Gazette)
