ELK CALF MOUNTAIN
Flathead County - Flathead National Forest - 29N-13W-9
April 17, 1930: "Supervisor W.E. Lockhart of the Lewis and Clark national forest returned last Friday from Kalispell where he was in conference for several days with Supervisor L.G. Hornsby of the Flathead forest over matters affecting the two forests, primarily game and fire protection.
Arrangements were made for cooperative studies on the elk situation. The supervisors agreed upon the establishment of a permanent lookout station on Elk Calf mountain to serve the two forests and a portion of the Glacier national park. Last year an emergency lookout was maintained here. The expense of maintaining this lookout will be divided 50-50 between the two forests. In return for favors from the Lewis and Clark forest, the Flathead forest agreed to patrol that portion of the Roosevelt highway which will pass through the Lewis and Clark forest when the highway is completed this summer." November 24, 1932: "About three miles of tree line was constructed from Two Medicine line to the top of Elk Calf mountain as an emergency lookout point. The Flathead national forest also built a line up from the west side from their system on Skyland-Granite coulee to connect with the Lewis and Clark line at Elk Calf mountain. The Elk Calf line was made possible through the emergency relief by congress for unemployment. The cost of this line was $300. The cost of the Flathead line is charged to the Flathead forest."
