JUMBO MOUNTAIN
Powell County - Flathead National Forest - 19N-12W-20
June 20, 1947: "Keith C. Boedeker, a World War II veteran, will be on top of 8,255-foot Jumbo mountain at the head of South Fork. He'll be 105 miles from civilization, and 55 miles from the end of the Spotted Bear road. It's primitive untouched mountain and forest, where the only fires are those caused by lightning. Few men have ever seen this size of the state of Rhode Island primitive patch.
Mail and fresh supplies will be dropped about once a week to the lookout by small parachutes from airplanes. The 12 by 14-foot windowed homes on the mountain tops are also connected with civilization by field telephone and short wave radio." (Hungry Horse News)
