July 3, 1921: "Joe B. Halm, fire assistant of the Missoula national forest, accompanied by Ranger Baird of the Monture station, inspected the lookout site a few days ago. They spent one night sleeping between two huge drifts of snow, the snow in some localities being from three to 10 feet in depth. The new lookout will be about 20 miles from the Monture station. Ranger Baird will start immediately the construction of a telephone line from Lake Creek trail to the summit." (The Missoulian)
April 29, 1945: "The Blackfoot Forest Protective association is constructing a new lookout tower on Montour mountain, seven miles southwest of Ovando. The work is in charge of Jack Clack, fire warden.
The additional tower will make five in all for this section, which comprises about a million acres. Other towers are on Union peak, Hunter's point, Saddle mountain and Raymond peak.
The new tower is to be 30 feet high, with living quarters 14 x 14 feet." (Helena Independent)
