April 23, 1930: "A lookout will be stationed on Mount Jumbo next summer to watch for forest fires, Supervisor J.F. Brooks of the Missoula national forest said yesterday.
The lookout of a temporary nature, is to be installed on the highest point of the elephant-like proportioned mountain east of Missoula. It will be at a height of 4,750 feet.
Last year the Forest Service used the top of the Montana building, but at times smoke hung so low over the city that the lookout could not see fires in neighboring valleys from that point. In many cases the Missoula office received telephone calls of fires from residents, and the lookout, on being given exact locations, could not see the blaze because of the smoke from the city.
The Jumbo lookout is to protect O'Brien, Hays creek, Marshall creek, Johnson gulch, the Rattlesnake, the head of Grant creek, Mitten mountain, and Miller creek. Telephone wire is now being strung to the top of Jumbo to provide telephone connections with the Missoula office.
The lookout will be protected by a tent." (The Daily Missoulian)
