August 4, 1935: "In the upper Blackfoot, three trail and telephone building crews are opening up roads to new lookout points. One of these to be established at Spread Mountain." (The Missoulian)
August 11, 1938: "Three lookout houses and towers are to be erected by the Lolo forest rangers this summer on the Seeley lake district, one at East Spread.
All being remote from roads, a packstring was sent Tuesday from the Ninemile remount station to carry the supplies and material over the mountain trails to the lookout sites.
Packs will be made of from 10 to 25 miles to the new lookout stations. The mules each will carry loads as heavy as 312 pounds.
Each 50-foot tower will require packing of a hundred mule loads into the backwoods, it was said.
The construction will be undertaken by C.C.C. workers, under direction of skilled foremen.
Occupancy of the lookout points will permit of more intensive fire protection in the Blackfoot country during the fire season." (The Independent Record)
September 11, 1938: "Lookout construction, telephone line work and trail making have made up an extensive program for the Blackfoot valley this summer, it was reported by Ranger W.R. Samsel of the Seeley lake district, who was in the city Saturday for the first time in two months.
