June 17, 1920: “Denver Laughlin left Friday on 42 for the Rock Creek ranger district. Mr. Laughlin will be stationed this summer at the Richards Peak lookout station. He has been employed by the forest service for the past two years at this station. This is a very important lookout peak for it overlooks a large body of fine timber in the Thompson river and Fishtrap country. Mr. Laughlin is one of the three cooperative fire protection men under the jurisdiction of the forest service in ranger district One. He is hired thru a cooperative agreement between the Forest Service and the Northern Montana Forestry Association. There are large and small timber owners in this association, many owning only 160 acres, some as low as 40 acres. This would indicate that even the small owners realize the value of fire protection.” (The Sanders County Independent-Ledger)
