July 17, 1930: "Dave Foster holds forth as lookout on McMillan mountain, where he has another rather lofty perch. There a lookout platform has been built at the top of a tree, 72 feet from the ground. The ascent is made by means of spikes driven into the tree, similar to those frequently seen on telephone or power poles for similar use. Ranger Byers reports that he recently had chicken wire netting stapled to the tree in such a manner that a man climbing to the top travels within a tunnel, and if he should miss a step and fall he would be caught by the netting, a wise precaution. 'Seventy-two feet is a long ways into the air,' said Byers, 'and we hated to take the chance of a man becoming injured or killed while climbing to the lookout platform." (The Western News)
1944: The lookout site was abandoned
